How can I catch up with him and become friends?

There's this guy in my school, we have the same background (where we lived, how many times we've moved, languages we speak), he's sweet and incredibly cute... he kinda reminds me of my father (but not in this sick way, just his personality...). And he's kinda reserved and shy, just like my father, while I'm shy on the inside, but cover it up with a huge smile and an outgoing personality... when i think of us being together, it kind of reminds me how my parents were together when they were younger. He's talked to me a whole lot and vice versa, and i had a ginormous crush on him. One day, we got to school at the same time and i was sending my friend a text, I wasn't done typing it when i heard someone call my name. I looked around for about 10sec or so to finally have my eyes land on him, his expression sort of looked concerned, almost like he wanted to talk to me. The weekend before, I'd been making myself miserable because the rumour got out and odds were he'd found out. So on Monday, when he talked to me, I was so surprised all I could say was 'hi!' and quickly go back to my text. We're in this international cl and we're one of the few bilingual people so we talked a lot to compare grades and so. Later on, vacation came, and when we went back to school, he felt pretty distant. That's been going on for a month now and my friends have tried talking to him, he told them it was just in my head because he wasn't avoiding or ignoring me. The other day, I looked back on our relationship, and it hit me, his behaviour felt like he almost had a .... crush on me! Now that I've told you that story, could you please help me figure out how to get a little closer to him? We both like HALO and he's lived in Brazil for most of his life while I've lived in China for most of my life... We're both more comfortable in English than French. Can you tell me how I could let him know that I want to be friends with him, and that if he did have a crush on me, the feeling went right back at him? Thank you SO MUCH!!!
