Why was the Olympic torch taken to the top of Mt. Everest?

I'm interested in what the perceived benefit would be to taking the Olympic torch to the top of Mt. Everest, located on the border of Nepal and Tibet. I'm sure that there was a great deal of personal risk involved for the climbers. What do you think was the purpose or reason for the torch being taken to the summit?
